CNR, May 20, Beijing – According to News and Newspaper Digest on FM106.1, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff attended the teleconference of the groundbreaking ceremony for Brazil’s Belo Monte Hydropower UHV Transmission Project. This project is China’s first successful overseas bid in UHV DC transmission project, and a major milestone in Sino-Brazil cooperation in the electric power field. CNR reporter Zhu Min had an exclusive interview with SGBH President Cai Hongxian about this project.

SGBH President Cai Hongxian said that this project is now waiting for the approval from the Ministry of Environment. Once it’s issued, construction can begin.

Cai Hongxian: Now we are working with our peers from Eletrobras for some preliminary work, such as EIA, land acquisition, line survey and exploration. And we are ready for construction once we get the permit, that is, the EIA report, which has been submitted and waiting for the approval from the Ministry of Environment. It’s estimated that the project can start construction in recent future when the approval is issued and it will be put into operation in February 2018.

Belo Monte Hydropower UHV Transmission Project is the second largest hydropower station in Brazil and the first UHV DC transmission line. According to Cai, upon its completion, it will benefit several major cities like Sao Paulo and Rio in the country.

Cai Hongxian: The installed capacity of Belo Monte Hydropower UHV Transmission Project exceeds 11GW, necessary to meet the needs for power and economic development in Brazil. It crosses five states to deliver the electricity generated in the hydropower station in the north to Sao Paulo in the southeast. The project will be able to deliver electricity to Rio in Phase 2.
